Patient: Mahza
Age/Sex/Breed: 22 year old Quarter Horse
DX: “PIGEON BREAST" CORYNEBACTERIUM PSEUDOTUBERCULOSIS
  • Prior History: Mahza presented with internal and external abscessation. Two previous vets attempted treatment with Trimethoprim and Penicillin with no results.
  • Diagnostics: At an examination on 2/2/2009 Mahza presented with multiple external abscess formations. UC Davis Veterinary Hospital diagnosed Corynebacterium Pseudotuberculosis 2/6/2009. A positive titer @ 1:5120 indicated internal and external abscessation and cultures completed at Idexx Laboratories were positive for Corynebacterium Pseudotuberculosis and confirmed the diagnosis. Laboratory panel (2/3/2009) revealed an elevated WBC with elevated neutrophils (77%) and decreased lymphocytes (16%).
  • Therapy: Administration of Ramaekers Equine Formula began 2/2/2009. Mahza was not administered any antibiotics.
  • Follow-up: At a progress exam on 3/25/2009, Mahza showed marked clinical improvements with respect to the external abscesses; in addition to improved appetite and energy. Laboratory analysis (3/25/2009) revealed a normal WBC and both neutrophils (54%) and lymphocytes (40%) had returned to normal.
  • At another progess exam on 5/11/2009, the external abscesses were nearly completely healed and Mahza showed significant improvements in overall appearance and health.

EQUINE STRANGLES STUDY 2004

Study conducted on a closed herd of 29 horses with acute and chronic hot strep equi with abscessation and weight loss. Horses were randomly assigned to a control group(14) and a treatment group(15). Normal signalment, weight and body/flesh ratings were recorded at day 0 and day 40. Absecessation (Strangles and prestrangles) was evaluated via ultra sound at start and after 40 days. All horses received autogenous bacterin and antibiotic treatment (Baytril). Treatment group were administered Ramaekers Equine Formula 2oz BID. Results showed that the treatment group experienced significantly better weight gain: an average weight gain of 39 pounds compared with 20 pounds for the controls. The attending veterinarian also noted marked improvements in body flesh and condition within the treatment group.
